Here's my advice on when to send your query to agents! Read this to ensure the best possible timing. #querytip #amquerying 👇🏻
- January & February: Wait it out. Everyone is sending their query now because of new year's resolutions and NaNoWriMo revisions.
- March: This is the month where agents gather on a secret skull-shaped island to laugh at NaNo submissions. Obvs not great timing.
- April: Every writer knows April is the cruelest month so, I mean, you can try, but probably better not to.
- May: No acquisitions by anyone at this time because it's reserved for agents and publishers working on ideas they've stolen from the slush pile, rewriting them into guaranteed bestsellers.
- June: Not a bad time to try, but first check the agent's mood on Twitter. If they're not tweeting, get hired as a part-time barista near their offices. When they come in for coffee, ask them, as a strictly disinterested party, how submissions are going.
- July: Publishers only acquiring copycats of the latest Netflix hit
- August: The entire industry vacations in August, so your query will just get deleted unread
- Sept: NOW is the perfect time! Wait a couple weeks for agents to catch up from vacation. But don't wait too long, because October is Frankfurt Book Fair. Sept. 15 is the best day to query, unless it falls on a weekend or Monday or Friday. If so, best to wait until next September
- October: Publishers unlikely to acquire anything until they see who wins the next election.
- November & December: Holidays. Might as well wait until the new year.
